Why programming is considered the alphabet of the digital age

In recent years, the importance of programming has gained great attention, creating a global awareness initiative. In this movement, even the US president, Barack Obama, has decided that programming should be mandatory in primary and secondary schools.

Only recently has humanity begun to understand how essential programming is, especially for the new generations. Learning scientific facts is becoming less and less relevant for the world, considering that there are research methods like Google that have answers for any fact you are interested in within milliseconds.

Children today are growing up in a world very different from that of their parents. Phones, computers, YouTube, Facebook have become an inseparable part of their lives. Even toys have become digital, and some of them can even be programmed. There is a big difference between the ability to use a computer and the ability to understand the logic behind all of this. When children learn programming, they begin to understand how to modify the digital world they are living in. Learning programming makes it possible for children not to see this digital world as some magic or miracle, but they will be able to understand the logic and science that controls this technology – which for them will be the real magic.

Humanity's dependence on technology will only increase. Today, for children, passive use of the computer will no longer be sufficient; they will need to be able to understand it and control it.

The same concept applies to the Digital School recently opened in Pristina. Through a curriculum created specifically for ages 7-15, the Digital School has begun educating the first generation of programmers in this age group, with more than 90 children becoming part of this global initiative. At the end of the 4 initial levels, children will be able to create computer programs, digital stories, animations, games, or any digital material their imagination can create.
